Solar and renewable-energy work is led by NABCEP certification, supported by the electrician trade license for installation and the PE for engineered systems. This overview maps the NABCEP board certifications, the engineering path, and the trade license.
NABCEP is the gold-standard certifier for solar — from the entry PV Associate to the PV Installation Professional (PVIP) and design/commissioning specialties. Installers also need an electrician license to perform the electrical work, and engineers who design and stamp larger systems pursue the PE (Electrical/Power).
The entry-level solar credential demonstrating foundational PV knowledge.
The premier board certification for solar installers.
Specialist board certifications for design, commissioning and energy storage.
The trade license required to perform the electrical work on solar installs.
The PE license for engineers who design and stamp larger renewable systems.
| Credential | Prerequisite | Typical experience | Administered by |
|---|---|---|---|
| NABCEP PV Associate | Approved training | None | NABCEP |
| NABCEP PVIP | Training | Installation experience* | NABCEP |
| NABCEP Specialties | Training | Specialty experience* | NABCEP |
| Electrician License | Apprenticeship | Several years* | State / local board |
| PE (Electrical: Power) | Pass FE | ~4 years* | NCEES + state board |
* Experience hours and prerequisites vary significantly by state, jurisdiction and credential level. Figures shown are typical ranges, not legal requirements.
The NABCEP PV Associate has no experience requirement and proves foundational knowledge — the natural first credential before you accrue field hours for the PVIP.

NABCEP certifies competence, but making the electrical connections usually requires an electrician license. Plan both if you want to install end-to-end.
Confirm the exact education, experience hours and application steps with the certifying body or state board first — missing a prerequisite trips up more people than the exam content does.
