How to write a strong engineering resume
Six habits that get engineering resumes read.
Lead with your license status
If you are an EIT, FE-passed or a licensed PE, put it in your title line and in the Licenses section. Recruiters and applicant-tracking systems search for these terms first.
Start every bullet with a verb and end with a result
Compare "Responsible for load calculations" with "Prepared load calculations for 12 projects, cutting rework requests by 30%". Numbers (dollars, square feet, kVA, schedule days) make the work real.
Name the codes and standards you actually used
NEC, NFPA 72, ASHRAE 90.1, IBC, AISC and similar. Hiring managers check these, and they are good keywords for applicant systems.
List software by name
AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, SKM, MATLAB, Bluebeam. Put the tools you use daily first.
Keep it to one page early in your career, two later
Under about 8 years of experience, one page is usually enough. Use the Compact template to fit more.
Keep the layout plain
Single column, standard headings and real text, not images or tables. All three templates here are built that way so applicant-tracking systems can read them.
