How fire flow demand is estimated
The ISO formula estimates the water flow rate needed to control a fire in a given building based on its size, construction type, and contents. The "effective area" for multistory buildings represents the realistic fire spread footprint — the largest floor plus half of the floor area immediately above and below it — which the base formula converts to gpm via a square-root relationship, then further adjusts for occupancy hazard, exposure to neighboring structures, and any reduction credited for automatic sprinkler protection.
