About the Soil Consolidation Simulator

An oedometer-style clay specimen sits between porous drainage boundaries under a sustained stress increment. Pore-pressure bars shrink, water leaves through selected drains and the platen settles as effective stress increases.

What the simulator shows

• 3D scene parts: Loading frame and sustained load; compressible saturated clay; porous drainage plates; excess pore-pressure profile; displacement gauge. • Controls: Clay layer thickness (2–8 m); Coefficient of consolidation (0.5–8 m²/year); Sustained stress increment (50–200 kPa); Volume compressibility mv (0.0001–0.001 1/kPa); Drainage boundaries (1–2 1=single, 2=double); Physical days per playback second (5–30 days/s). • Live readouts: Physical elapsed time (days); Average consolidation U; Settlement (mm); Ultimate primary settlement (mm); Average excess pore pressure (kPa); Effective stress increment (kPa); Drainage path length (m). • Guided experiments: Double drainage; Single drainage; More compressible clay. • Four tabs (visual laboratory, curves and measurements, experiments, learn and assess), a model-verification run, a timestamped event log and a trial report.

The model equations

Tv=cv t / Hdr²; Hdr=H/Ndrains U=1−Σ[8/(π²(2m+1)²)] exp[−(2m+1)²π²Tv/4] S∞=mv Δσ H; S(t)=U S∞ Average excess u=Δσ(1−U); Δσ′=ΔσU

Model limits and how to explore

Terzaghi one-dimensional primary consolidation, uniform initial excess pressure, constant cv and mv, small-strain layer thickness held fixed, 100 Fourier terms. cv uses m²/year; elapsed days are converted to years. No secondary compression, nonlinear compressibility or drainage resistance. Visual deformation is enlarged; use numerical settlement values. Try the preset experiments, then compare the live readouts with the equations.

Frequently asked questions

Does double drainage halve the time to a given U?

No. It quarters time because the drainage path is squared.

Do pore and effective stress increments sum to total applied increment?

Yes. The model partitions the constant increment between water and soil skeleton.

What does this simulator not model?

Terzaghi one-dimensional primary consolidation, uniform initial excess pressure, constant cv and mv, small-strain layer thickness held fixed, 100 Fourier terms. cv uses m²/year; elapsed days are converted to years. No secondary compression, nonlinear compressibility or drainage resistance. Visual deformation is enlarged; use numerical settlement values.
