Which credential is harder to obtain?

PMP requires documented project management experience (35–36 months depending on education level, or an approved bachelor's-level program) plus 35 contact hours of project management education before you can even sit the exam, in addition to passing a 180-question exam. PRINCE2 Foundation has no experience prerequisite and is a shorter, less experience-gated exam; PRINCE2 Practitioner is more involved but still generally considered less of a barrier to entry than PMP's eligibility requirements.

Can I hold both PMP and PRINCE2 at once?

Yes, and it is common for program managers working across US and UK/EU/Commonwealth markets — the two credentials are not mutually exclusive and neither certifying body requires you to drop the other.

Does PRINCE2 replace the need for scheduling techniques like the critical path method?

No — PRINCE2 defines the governance process and management products (Project Plan, Stage Plan, etc.) but does not replace the underlying scheduling and estimating techniques (CPM, three-point estimating) you still use to actually build those plans, the same techniques PMP candidates study directly.

Is one credential more respected in engineering specifically?

It depends on the engineering sub-sector and country far more than the discipline itself. Large US-based engineering, construction, and aerospace firms weight PMP heavily; UK/EU infrastructure, rail, and public-sector engineering programs frequently mandate or strongly prefer PRINCE2. PMP vs PRINCE2

A knowledge-area framework built around ten domains of practice versus a process-based method built around seven defined stages — and why picking one over the other usually comes down to where you work, not which is "better."

Engineers moving between US-based and UK/EU/Commonwealth employers run into this constantly: two respected project management credentials that both claim to teach "how to run a project," yet structure the whole discipline differently. PMP (Project Management Professional, from the Project Management Institute) is a certification proving competency across a broad body of knowledge — it describes principles, performance domains, and a tailorable set of practices, but it does not hand you a fixed sequence of stages to follow. PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments, from Axelos/PeopleCert) is a certified method — it defines seven specific processes a project must pass through, seven themes that must be addressed throughout, and seven principles that make a project "a PRINCE2 project" if followed. The difference is less "which is more rigorous" and more "body of knowledge you apply flexibly" vs "method you follow as specified."
