What water temperature should I design for a radiant floor system to work with a condensing boiler?

Condensing boilers achieve maximum efficiency when return water temperature is below 130°F (ideally below 120°F). Radiant floor systems typically operate at supply water temperatures of 90–110°F in mild weather and up to 120–130°F at design winter conditions. This is an excellent match for condensing boilers — the boiler can achieve 92–97% efficiency with radiant floor return temperatures of 80–100°F. Design the radiant floor supply temperature using outdoor reset: at 0°F design outdoor temperature, supply 120°F water; at 50°F OAT, supply 85°F water. Verify that the floor surface temperature stays below 84°F at design conditions for comfort compliance with ASHRAE 55.

How do I size a hydronic baseboard radiation terminal?

Baseboard radiation is rated in Btu/h per linear foot at standard conditions (AHRI 1200: 65°F entering air, specific water temperatures). Rating tables are published by manufacturers and AHRI. For a given zone heating load (from Manual J calculation), size the total linear feet of baseboard required = heating load (Btu/h) / output per foot at design water temperature. For example, at 180°F average water temperature, typical fin-tube baseboard outputs 600 Btu/h per linear foot. A 6,000 Btu/h zone requires 10 linear feet minimum. Always verify available wall length — if insufficient, use a higher-output cabinet convector or consider fan-coil units for zones with limited perimeter length.

What glycol concentration should I use in a hydronic heating system?

In closed heating-only systems not exposed to freezing (boiler room stays above 50°F, no outdoor piping), plain water with corrosion inhibitor is preferred for maximum heat transfer efficiency. Glycol reduces specific heat and increases viscosity, requiring 15–25% more pump energy. If freeze protection is required (outdoor piping, unheated spaces), use propylene glycol for systems where incidental food or human contact is possible, or ethylene glycol for closed mechanical systems. For -20°F protection, approximately 40% by volume propylene glycol is required. What is reverse-return piping and when should I use it?

Reverse-return (Tichelmann) piping connects supply and return mains so that the total distance (supply + return pipe length) from the pump to each terminal unit is approximately equal. This inherent geometric balance means that pressure drop to each terminal is similar, minimizing the need for manual balancing valves. Use reverse-return when: you have 4 or more similar terminal units on a branch circuit; the units have similar flow requirements; and balancing valve installation or service is difficult. When terminals have very different flow requirements, or when a compact layout makes reverse-return impractical, use direct-return piping with calibrated balancing valves at each terminal.

Hydronic heating uses hot water as the heat transfer medium, circulated from a central boiler or heat pump to terminal units distributed throughout the building. Compared to forced-air heating, hydronic systems offer superior thermal comfort (radiant systems in particular), better zone control, lower noise levels, and significant design flexibility.
