Like the FE exam, the PE exam uses scaled scoring. There is no fixed number of correct answers required — NCEES adjusts for exam difficulty so that a consistent standard is applied across all exam versions. You will receive a Pass or Fail result, never a numeric score.

How Many Questions Are on the PE Exam?

The computer-based PE exam (CBT format, introduced for most disciplines starting 2020) has 80 questions delivered over two 4-hour sessions. Some disciplines (PE Civil) have 80 questions; others vary slightly. The exam is open-book (digital reference materials provided by NCEES) but you cannot bring your own references.

Based on psychometric research and candidate reports, most PE disciplines require answering approximately 56–62 questions correctly out of 80 (roughly 70–78%) to pass. However, since this varies by discipline and exam version, you should aim for at least 70% confidence on every topic area, not just the ones you like.

NCEES publishes pass rates. First-time takers from ABET-accredited programs generally pass at these rates:

• PE Civil (all modules): ~64–74% depending on module
• PE Electrical & Computer — Power: ~62%
• PE Mechanical: ~68%
• PE Structural: ~59%
• PE Chemical: ~71%
• PE Environmental: ~60%

The PE is significantly harder than the FE. Many candidates spend 3–6 months studying 10–15 hours per week.

The PE Civil Is Now Module-Based

As of 2023, the PE Civil exam is split into two sessions: a breadth session (general civil topics) and a depth module you choose (Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, or Water Resources). You must pass both sessions. Study heavily for your chosen depth module — it counts the same as the breadth session.

What to Do If You Fail

• Request your diagnostic report and identify the topic areas where you scored lowest
• Shift your study plan dramatically — repeating the same approach rarely changes outcomes
• Consider a structured PE prep course rather than self-study alone
• Practice with timed sessions — many failures are time management issues, not knowledge gaps

How Long Before You Get Your Results?

PE exam results are typically released within 7–10 days of the end of the testing window. You receive an email from NCEES with your Pass/Fail result. Your state board then processes your license application separately, which can take weeks to months depending on the state.
