What Fire Suppression Engineers Do
Fire suppression engineers design the systems that automatically extinguish or suppress fires before they spread. The most common system is the automatic fire sprinkler, governed by NFPA 13 (commercial), NFPA 13R (residential), and NFPA 13D (one- and two-family dwellings). Engineers must perform hydraulic calculations to size pipes and verify adequate water supply from the building water service or a dedicated fire pump.
Beyond sprinklers, fire suppression engineers design clean agent systems for protecting sensitive electronics (data centers, control rooms) using agents like FM-200 (HFC-227ea) or Novec 1230, which extinguish fires without leaving residue or damaging equipment. They also design CO2 systems, water mist systems, and foam systems for special hazards like aircraft hangars and chemical storage.
Key to this work is coordinating with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), performing acceptance testing, and working with the fire alarm engineer to ensure proper interface between suppression system waterflow switches and the fire alarm panel. NICET certification in sprinkler system design is the primary credential for this field.
