What Geotechnical Engineers Do
Geotechnical engineers study the earth materials beneath our structures to ensure safe and economical foundations. Their work starts with site investigation — directing soil borings, test pits, and in-situ testing (SPT, CPT) — then moves to laboratory testing of soil samples for strength, compressibility, and classification properties.
From this data, geotechnical engineers prepare geotechnical investigation reports (geotech reports) that provide design recommendations for shallow foundations (spread footings), deep foundations (piles, drilled shafts), retaining walls, slopes, and earthwork compaction. They also assess seismic site class per ASCE 7, which affects the seismic design requirements for the structural engineer.
Specialized areas include ground improvement (stone columns, deep soil mixing), environmental geotechnics (contaminated site remediation), offshore geotechnics (for oil platforms and offshore wind), and forensic geotechnics (investigating landslides, foundation failures). Geotechnical engineers work closely with civil and structural engineers and spend significant time in the field during site investigations and construction monitoring.
