About the Water Hammer / Surge Simulator

A reservoir-fed pipe cutaway maps pressure at 41 stations. Slow physical time reveals the upstream-traveling compression wave, reflection at a fixed-head reservoir and subsequent pressure reversals. The valve is commanded to reduce velocity linearly.

What the simulator shows

• 3D scene parts: Fixed-head reservoir; elastic-pipe pressure stations; closing valve and actuator; pressure profile ribbon; pressure recorder. • Controls: Pipe length (100–1000 m); Wave speed (600–1400 m/s); Initial velocity (0.5–3 m/s); Initial gauge pressure head (20–100 m); Valve velocity closure time (0.05–3 s); Physical time per playback second (0.1–1 s/s). • Live readouts: Valve gauge head (m); Peak gauge head (m); Minimum gauge head (m); Rapid-closure surge estimate (m); Wave round trip 2L/a (s); Physical elapsed time (s); Valve gauge pressure (bar). • Guided experiments: Rapid closure; Gradual closure; High surge exposure. • Four tabs (visual laboratory, curves and measurements, experiments, learn and assess), a model-verification run, a timestamped event log and a trial report.

The model equations

B=a/g; Δt=L/(40a) C+=Hleft+B Vleft; C−=Hright−B Vright H=(C++C−)/2; V=(C+−C−)/(2B) At reservoir H=H0; at valve V=V0 max(0,1−t/Tc) Joukowsky rapid-closure ΔH=aV0/g; wave round trip=2L/a

Model limits and how to explore

Frictionless horizontal elastic water column, fixed-head upstream reservoir, prescribed downstream velocity, 40 reaches at Courant number 1. Wave speed is supplied, not derived from material. No attenuation, air, column separation or cavitation model. A below-vapor-pressure warning marks invalid single-phase results; negative head must not be interpreted as a valid cavitation prediction. Pipe/wave geometry and playback are scaled. Try the preset experiments, then compare the live readouts with the equations.

Frequently asked questions

Does a fixed-head reservoir reverse the reflected pressure perturbation?

Yes. The pressure perturbation must be zero at the reservoir boundary.

Does the model calculate vapor-cavity growth?

No. It warns when single-phase assumptions fail but does not solve column separation.

What does this simulator not model?

Frictionless horizontal elastic water column, fixed-head upstream reservoir, prescribed downstream velocity, 40 reaches at Courant number 1. Wave speed is supplied, not derived from material. No attenuation, air, column separation or cavitation model. A below-vapor-pressure warning marks invalid single-phase results; negative head must not be interpreted as a valid cavitation prediction.
