This worksheet follows the general structure of an NEC Article 220 electrical load calculation — general lighting and receptacle loads, appliance loads, HVAC, largest motor, demand factors, and a resulting service size. It is a documentation worksheet, not a calculator — you compute and enter each value yourself (or transfer it from your own calculation), using the reference formula printed next to each field. This keeps a clear paper trail of exactly how a load calculation was performed, which is often what a permit reviewer or client wants to see. Project Information
1. General Lighting & Receptacle Load
General lighting VA = Sq. Ft. × unit load per NEC Table 220.12 (e.g. 3 VA/sqft dwelling, 3.5 VA/sqft office)
2. Fixed Appliance Loads
List each fixed appliance (water heater, dishwasher, dryer, range, etc.) with its nameplate VA; demand factors per NEC 220.53/220.54/220.55 are applied separately below.

3. HVAC Load
Use the larger of the heating or cooling nameplate load per NEC 220.60/220.82 (heating and cooling are non-coincident — do not add both).
4. Largest Motor Load
Largest motor addition = largest single motor FLA × 25% per NEC 430.24 — added on top of the sum of all other motor loads at 100%.
5. Demand Factors, Totals & Service Size
Total Connected Load = sum of all loads above at 100%. Total Demand Load = connected load with applicable NEC demand factors applied (220.42 lighting, 220.53 appliances, 220.55 ranges, etc.). Recommended service size = total demand load ÷ system voltage, rounded up to the next standard overcurrent device rating (NEC 220.87 / 230.79).
How to Use This Template
  1. Fill in Project Information, then work through Sections 1–4 in order — general lighting/receptacle, fixed appliances, HVAC, and largest motor — entering the VA value you've calculated for each using the reference formula shown under each section heading.
  2. In Section 5, apply the demand factors that are appropriate for the occupancy type per the current NEC (Article 220, Part III for dwellings or Part IV for other occupancies) and note which sections you used.
  3. Sum the connected load (100% of everything) and the demand load (after demand factors) — these are two different numbers and both are worth documenting.
  4. Divide total demand load by system voltage to get demand amps, then round up to the next standard overcurrent protective device rating for the recommended service size.
  5. This worksheet is a record of a calculation you've already performed — always verify your arithmetic and demand factor selections against the current edition of the NEC adopted by your jurisdiction before finalizing a design.
