Financial Universe: Financial Markets Learning Simulator

Twelve interactive modules for learning how financial markets work: sample market dashboards, bond pricing, option payoffs and Greeks, synthetic charts, company ratios, a hypothetical portfolio with a stress test, and an order-arithmetic sandbox. Everything runs in your browser on invented sample data.

EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY: NOT FINANCIAL, INVESTMENT, TAX OR LEGAL ADVICEThis tool is a learning simulation. It does not give financial, investment, trading, tax, legal or accounting advice, and nothing in it is a recommendation, solicitation or offer to buy or sell any security, currency, crypto asset, commodity or other instrument. EngineersUniverse is not a broker-dealer, investment adviser, bank or financial planner. All prices, changes, ratios, indicators, charts, news items and portfolios are invented sample data, are not real or current market information, and must not be used to make financial decisions. Calculations are simplified teaching models that leave out fees, taxes, liquidity, credit risk and many real-world factors, so results will differ from real markets. Real investing involves risk, including loss of principal. Past or simulated results do not predict future results. No real-money trading, brokerage connection or live data is included. Consult a licensed professional before making any financial decision.

About Financial Universe

Financial Universe is a browser-based learning simulator for people who want to understand how financial markets and investment calculations work. It bundles twelve modules: Global Markets, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Charting, Company Intelligence, Economic Intelligence, News & Research, a Hypothetical Portfolio & Risk module, a Trading Laboratory, Research Practice, a Learning Notebook and a Learning Guide. It is an educational tool only and does not provide financial advice.

Important: not financial advice

Financial Universe is for education only. It does not provide financial, investment, trading, tax, legal or accounting advice, and nothing in it is a recommendation or an offer to buy or sell any security, currency, crypto asset, commodity or other instrument. EngineersUniverse is not a broker-dealer, investment adviser, bank or financial planner.

Every price, change, ratio, indicator, chart, news item and portfolio value is invented sample data. None of it is real or current, and none of it should be used to make a financial decision. The calculations are simplified teaching models that leave out fees, taxes, liquidity, credit risk and many other real-world factors, so they will not match real markets. Real investing carries risk, including the loss of the money invested. Speak to a licensed professional before making financial decisions.

What the modules cover

Global Markets lists sample securities across equities, ETFs, crypto, FX, commodities and rates, with a watchlist and sample price alerts. Fixed Income prices a bond from its coupon, required yield and maturity, and shows modified duration and convexity next to a synthetic yield curve. Derivatives plots a long call or put payoff with its break-even, and prices a European option with Black-Scholes, showing delta, gamma, vega and theta.

Charting draws deterministic synthetic price history with SMA, EMA and Bollinger band studies, a 14-session RSI, trend-line drawing and a one or two chart desk that can be saved in your browser. Company Intelligence compares illustrative P/E and dividend yield and includes a screener. Economic Intelligence shows sample macro indicators. News & Research is a small library of fictional articles for practising research literacy.

Portfolio, trading sandbox and notes

The Hypothetical Portfolio module lets you add fictional lots, see allocation, unrealized gain or loss, a historical-style value at risk computed from synthetic returns, and a simple parallel price shock. The Trading Laboratory only multiplies a quantity by a sample price to show the notional of an order; nothing is sent anywhere and there is no brokerage connection. Research Practice builds a checklist from a template (no AI is used), and the Learning Notebook saves private notes.

Holdings, watchlist, alerts, notes and the saved chart desk are stored only in your own browser (local storage). They are not uploaded and are lost if you clear site data.

How to use it

Open the Learning Guide first for a numbered lesson on each module, then work through the modules in any order. Change one input at a time (for example the required yield in Fixed Income) and watch the output move, so you can connect the formula to the behavior. Use the notebook to write down your assumptions. Treat the output as a worked example, never as a forecast or a signal.

Frequently asked questions

Does Financial Universe give financial or investment advice?

No. It is an educational simulator. It does not give financial, investment, trading, tax or legal advice, and nothing in it is a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Consult a licensed professional for advice about your own situation.

Is the market data real or live?

No. All prices, changes, ratios, economic indicators, news articles and chart history are invented sample data bundled with the tool. There is no live or delayed market feed, and the data must not be used for real decisions.

Can I place real trades with it?

No. The Trading Laboratory only multiplies a quantity by a sample price. There is no brokerage connection, no order submission and no real-money trading of any kind.

How accurate are the bond and option calculations?

The formulas are standard textbook models (annual-coupon bond pricing with finite-difference duration and convexity, and Black-Scholes for a European option with no dividends), implemented for teaching. They omit accrued interest, fees, taxes, early exercise and liquidity, so they are not suitable for pricing real instruments.

Where is my portfolio and notes data stored?

Only in your own browser using local storage. It is not uploaded to EngineersUniverse. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Is Financial Universe free?

This page has a free description and the full disclaimer. The interactive simulator itself is paid content, unlocked with the same All-Access Pass as the other tools on the site.
