Supervisory, Trouble & Alarm Signals — Three Panel States That Demand Three Different Responses

A fire alarm panel doesn't just have "normal" and "fire." It has three states, and confusing any two of them is a real, documented way for a building to lose fire protection without anyone realizing it.

Every NFPA 72-compliant fire alarm control panel (FACP) is built to display, log, and typically report three distinct categories of off-normal condition, each with its own priority, its own tone/pattern, and its own required response: alarm, supervisory, and trouble. It would be simpler to just have "fine" and "not fine" — but simpler would also be dangerous, because "not fine" covers problems that are wildly different in urgency and in what's actually broken.

An alarm signal means a fire is believed to be happening right now. A supervisory signal means a fire protection support system — almost always sprinkler-related — currently couldn't do its job if a fire did happen. A trouble signal means the fire alarm system itself has a fault. Three categories exist because three genuinely different problems exist — and collapsing any two of them is how buildings quietly lose protection.

Alarm, supervisory, and trouble aren't three levels on the same scale — they're answers to three different questions. Alarm answers "is a fire happening right now?" Supervisory answers "if a fire happened right now, could the sprinkler system actually respond?" Trouble answers "is the fire alarm system healthy enough to reliably detect and report a fire at all?"
