What Fire Alarm Practitioners Actually Do

Fire alarm engineering is the discipline of designing, laying out, and specifying the systems that detect a fire and notify a building's occupants and emergency responders in time to act — smoke and heat detectors, manual pull stations, horns and strobes, the fire alarm control panel (FACP) that ties it all together, and the wiring and battery backup that keep the whole system functioning even during a power outage. It sits at the intersection of electrical engineering and fire protection engineering, and unlike most electrical design work, it is governed almost entirely by a single, extremely detailed code: NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, which specifies not just what equipment is required but exactly how far apart devices can be spaced, how loud notification appliances must be, how much standby battery capacity is required, and how the whole system must be tested and documented.
