Why These Terms Matter
Fire suppression engineering draws its vocabulary from NFPA standards, insurance underwriting practice, and decades of fire dynamics research. A fire protection engineer, sprinkler designer, or AHJ (authority having jurisdiction) uses these terms with precise, code-defined meanings that determine hydraulic design criteria, agent selection, and life-safety outcomes. Getting a term wrong — confusing "density" with "flow," or "dry pipe" with "preaction" — can lead to an under-designed system, a failed plan review, or worse, a system that does not perform as intended during an actual fire.

- Actuation Device — NFPA 17/17A

- AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) — NFPA 11

- Alarm Check Valve — NFPA 13

- Antifreeze System — NFPA 13
- A wet-pipe sprinkler system in which listed antifreeze solution, rather than plain water, fills piping subject to freezing. Following NFPA 13's post-2011 requirements, only pre-mixed, factory-listed antifreeze solutions at listed concentrations are permitted — site-mixed glycerin or propylene glycol solutions are no longer allowed due to documented fire tests showing they can ignite and accelerate fire spread.
- Area of Sprinkler Operation — NFPA 13
- The design area used for hydraulic calculations — the portion of the sprinkler system, expressed in square feet, assumed to operate simultaneously in a fire, against which the design density is applied. - Backflow Preventer — NFPA 13, 24
- A device installed on the water supply connection to a fire protection system that prevents contaminated water in the fire system from flowing back into the potable water supply. - Backup Battery / Standby Power — NFPA 20

- Bourdon Gauge — NFPA 25

- Branch Line — NFPA 13

- Bulb-Type Sprinkler — NFPA 13
- A sprinkler head that uses a liquid-filled glass bulb as its thermal-sensitive element. The bulb shatters at its rated temperature (e.g., 155°F/68°C for standard-response ordinary temperature), releasing the cap and allowing water discharge. - Cross Main — NFPA 13
- The pipe supplying branch lines, either directly or through a feed main, typically the largest pipe in a sprinkler zone after the riser itself. Cross mains run perpendicular to branch lines in a typical gridded or tree sprinkler layout.
- Clean Agent — NFPA 2001
- An electrically nonconducting, volatile, or gaseous fire extinguishant that does not leave a residue upon evaporation. Clean agents include halocarbon agents (FM-200/HFC-227ea, Novec 1230) and inert gas agents (IG-541, IG-100, IG-55) — used to protect data centers, archives, and electrical rooms where water damage or residue from dry chemical agents would be unacceptable.
- Concentration (Design) — NFPA 2001
- The percentage, by volume, of clean agent required in a protected space's atmosphere to extinguish a specific fuel's fire, typically expressed with a safety margin above the minimum extinguishing concentration determined by cup burner testing.
- Cup Burner Test — NFPA 2001
- A standardized laboratory test method used to determine the minimum extinguishing concentration of a gaseous clean agent against a specific fuel, forming the technical basis for design concentration requirements in NFPA 2001.
- Cylinder (Agent Storage) — NFPA 12, 2001

- Deflagration
- A combustion process that propagates through a fuel-air mixture at subsonic speed, driven by heat transfer, as opposed to detonation which propagates via shockwave at supersonic speed. Most building fires and dust explosions involve deflagration; understanding this distinction matters for explosion venting and suppression system design.
- Density (Design Density) — NFPA 13
- The rate of water application, expressed in gallons per minute per square foot (gpm/sq ft), required over the design area of a sprinkler system. Density requirements increase with hazard classification: Light Hazard is typically 0.10 gpm/sq ft, Ordinary Hazard Group 2 is 0.20 gpm/sq ft, and Extra Hazard can exceed 0.40 gpm/sq ft.
- Density/Area Method — NFPA 13

- Detector Check Valve

- Discharge Time — NFPA 2001, 12
- The maximum permitted time for a clean agent or CO2 system to reach its design concentration after actuation, typically 10 seconds for halocarbon agents and up to 60 seconds for inert gas agents in NFPA 2001, chosen to outpace fire growth while limiting turbulence and agent loss through openings.
- Double Interlock (Preaction) — NFPA 13

- Fire Department Connection (FDC) — NFPA 13, 14

- Fire Load
- The total quantity of combustible material present in a space, expressed as heat energy released per unit floor area (typically Btu/sq ft or MJ/sq m), used to estimate potential fire severity and to inform hazard classification and structural fire resistance requirements.
- Fire Point
- The lowest temperature at which a liquid fuel generates sufficient vapor to sustain continuous combustion after ignition (distinguished from flash point, at which vapor ignites but does not sustain burning). Fire point is typically a few degrees above flash point.
- Fire Pump — NFPA 20
- A pump (electric or diesel driven) dedicated to boosting water pressure and flow for fire protection systems when the available municipal or gravity supply is insufficient. Fire pumps are rated at 100%, 150%, and 200% of rated flow points on their characteristic curve and must be listed and installed per NFPA 20.
- Flame Detector
- A detection device sensing infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV), or combined UV/IR radiation characteristic of open flame, used to actuate suppression systems rapidly in high-hazard applications (aircraft hangars, turbine enclosures) where response speed is critical.
- Flame Spread Index — ASTM E84
- A numerical rating derived from the Steiner tunnel test describing how quickly flame spreads across a material's surface relative to red oak (rated 100), used in building and fire codes to classify interior finish materials.
- Flashover
- The near-simultaneous transition to full-room involvement in fire, in which radiant heat from a growing fire ignites all exposed combustible surfaces in a compartment nearly instantaneously. Flashover typically occurs when upper-layer gas temperatures reach approximately 1,100°F (600°C) and represents a critical threshold in fire dynamics and life-safety egress timing.
- Foam Concentrate — NFPA 11
- The undiluted foaming agent stored for a foam suppression system, mixed with water at a specified proportioning rate (commonly 1%, 3%, or 6%) to form foam solution before being aerated into finished foam at the discharge device.
- Foam Proportioner — NFPA 11

H
- Halon — NFPA 2001
- A family of halogenated hydrocarbon fire suppression agents (Halon 1301, Halon 1211) that were highly effective clean agents but are ozone-depleting substances banned from new production under the Montreal Protocol. Existing Halon 1301 systems may remain in service and be recharged from recycled stock, but new installations use replacement agents like FM-200 or inert gases.
- Heat Release Rate (HRR)

- Igniter (Pilot Flame)
