What Graphene Actually Is

Graphene is a single, atom-thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice — essentially one sheet peeled off graphite, the same material found in a pencil, but isolated to a single two-dimensional layer rather than the many stacked layers that make up bulk graphite. That single-atom-thick, perfectly ordered structure is what gives graphene its exceptional properties: it is roughly 200 times stronger than steel by weight, an excellent conductor of both electricity and heat, and essentially transparent, since a single atomic layer barely interacts with visible light. No other known material combines this specific set of mechanical, electrical, and optical properties simultaneously, which is exactly why graphene generated such enormous research interest since it was first successfully isolated in 2004 (a discovery that earned the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics).
