What Actually Makes a Battery "Solid-State"
A conventional lithium-ion battery moves lithium ions between the anode and cathode through a liquid electrolyte — typically a lithium salt dissolved in an organic solvent, soaked into a porous separator that physically keeps the electrodes apart while still letting ions pass through. A solid-state battery replaces that liquid electrolyte entirely with a solid ion-conducting material — a ceramic, a solid polymer, or a sulfide-based compound — that does the same ion-transport job without any liquid at all. This single substitution sounds simple, but it changes the battery's fundamental engineering trade-offs in several important ways at once.
