Systems Engineering

Requirements, architecture & reliability — how a system is decomposed, bounded, allocated, analysed for failure and verified.

📋

Requirements → Architecture

A spacecraft bus, deployable solar arrays, battery, radio and antenna demonstrate allocation of an electrical-power requirement to physical architecture. A live traceability board exposes unallocated requirements and power-budget shortfalls.

Functional Decomposition

A cutaway washing machine maps fill, heat, agitate, drain and spin functions to valves, heater, drum drive and pump. Active function branches illuminate as the drum and water level change.

Interface Definition

An industrial-controller bench exposes keyed connectors, voltage rails, a differential data pair and a receiving drive. Match electrical supply and protocol settings before frames can cross the interface.

System Boundary

A weather station contains mast sensors, logger and solar-powered radio, while sunlight, wind and the remote receiving station remain external. Changing boundary scope alters which interface links cross it.

Redundancy Design

Two independent pump trains feed a common water-delivery header. Fail either train, compare N+1 capacity against demand, and expose the common-header failure that duplicate pumps cannot overcome.

Reliability Allocation

Three series stages of a launch-system teaching architecture illuminate as mission time advances. Allocate a system reliability target equally, then compare actual subsystem rates against the implied rate budget.

Failure Modes

A cutaway electromechanical actuator reveals motor rotor, gearing, leadscrew, carriage and position sensor. Inject a jam, a broken coupling or a biased sensor and distinguish motion, command and measured feedback.

Fault Tree Construction

Two independent power branches feed a common output breaker. A spatial logic tree shows the top event as common-breaker failure OR both source-branch failures. Toggle events and compare Boolean logic with independent-event probability.

FMEA

A conveyor with roller drive, product sensor and safety guard is paired with a risk-review workstation. Select a failure row, edit ordinal severity/occurrence/detection ratings, and observe how mitigation changes RPN without erasing severity.

Verification & Validation

A rover crosses a sloped terrain course beside a measurement gantry. Compare a specification-based speed test with a stakeholder slope-and-endurance task. Passing verification alone does not ensure the operational need is met.
