About the Functional Decomposition Simulator

A cutaway washing machine maps fill, heat, agitate, drain and spin functions to valves, heater, drum drive and pump. Active function branches illuminate as the drum and water level change.

What the simulator shows

• 3D scene parts: Cabinet / functional boundary; drum and drive; fill valve; heater; drain pump and hose; function hierarchy. • Controls: Fill duration (1–5 playback s); Wash duration (2–8 playback s); Block drain function. • Live readouts: Active function index; Water retained (%); Illustrative drum speed (rpm); Cycle progress (%). • Guided experiments: Drain blocked; Long wash. • Four tabs (visual laboratory, curves and measurements, experiments, learn and assess), a model-verification run, a timestamped event log and a trial report.

The model equations

Sequence: fill → heat → agitate → drain → spin Progress = elapsed / nominal total time Blocked drain holds the sequence before spin

Model limits and how to explore

Representative systems-engineering teaching example. Equipment geometry and animation time are illustrative; this is not an equipment qualification, safety assessment or certification tool. Playback timing and drum speed are illustrative. Water is a normalized inventory, not a flow/thermal calculation. Functions are distinguished from the components implementing them. Try the preset experiments, then compare the live readouts with the equations.

Frequently asked questions

Does an illustrative passing model certify a real system?

No. The stated model omits real qualification evidence and system-specific assumptions.

Which principle does this laboratory emphasize?

Separate functions from their implementing components.

What does this simulator not model?

Representative systems-engineering teaching example. Equipment geometry and animation time are illustrative; this is not an equipment qualification, safety assessment or certification tool. Playback timing and drum speed are illustrative. Water is a normalized inventory, not a flow/thermal calculation. Functions are distinguished from the components implementing them.
