Maintenance

Scheduled and unscheduled maintenance program structure, MSG-3 inspection logic, airworthiness directives and service bulletins, and maintenance's role in continued airworthiness across an aircraft's entire operational life.

Certification establishes that a new aircraft meets the airworthiness standard on the day it's approved. Continued airworthiness is the separate, ongoing obligation that it keeps meeting that standard for decades afterward, and maintenance is the mechanism that obligation is actually discharged through — this module works through MSG-3 scheduled maintenance logic, the diagnostic discipline unscheduled maintenance depends on, mandatory airworthiness directives versus discretionary service bulletins, and the reliability-program feedback loop that keeps the whole system honest against real fleet experience.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why the fail-safe redundancy philosophy from this program's aircraft systems module (Module 13) assumes a functioning maintenance program will catch degradation in one redundant element before a second, independent one also fails — and why an AD, unlike an SB, is not something an operator gets to weigh and decide against.
