From Emergency Backup to a Primary Role
Onsite generation has historically been a pure backup system in data center design — sized to N+1 or 2N redundancy, tested regularly, and expected to run only during an actual utility outage. For large AI facilities, that role is expanding: because utility interconnection capacity has become the binding constraint on how quickly a site can add compute (see AI Data Center Electrical Design — Complete Guide), onsite generation is increasingly being designed to run continuously in parallel with the grid, not just stand by for an outage. This shift changes the engineering calculus substantially — equipment sized for occasional emergency runtime has very different maintenance, emissions, and fuel-logistics requirements than equipment expected to run continuously for years.
