A Different Generation Technology for a Different Scale

Gas turbines and reciprocating engine-generators (see Data Center Generator Systems Explained for the reciprocating-engine-based approach) both convert fuel into rotating mechanical energy that drives an electrical generator, but they work on fundamentally different mechanical principles and scale differently. A gas turbine compresses air, mixes it with fuel, burns it continuously, and extracts energy from the resulting high-velocity exhaust gas spinning a turbine — a continuous-combustion process, as opposed to a reciprocating engine's repeated piston-driven combustion cycles. For large AI data centers, gas turbines are gaining serious consideration specifically because of how they scale and how they fit into a facility's onsite generation strategy.
