Why a duct detector sitting in the ductwork that feeds a room does not protect the people inside that room.
Both devices are, physically, smoke detectors — often the exact same sensing element. What's completely different is what air each one samples and what job it's wired to do when it senses smoke. An area (room) smoke detector is mounted directly in the occupied space, sampling that space's actual ambient air, and its alarm is meant to notify the people in the building. A duct detector is mounted inside a supply or return air duct, sampling only the air already moving through that duct, and its signal is meant to shut down or reconfigure the HVAC system — not to notify anyone.
This is a different axis from ionization-vs-photoelectric — that comparison is about detection technology. This one is about detector purpose and placement, and it's the source of a genuinely dangerous assumption: that a room served by ductwork with a duct detector in it is thereby "covered" for smoke detection. It usually isn't.
