Why Fire Alarm Terminology Matters

Fire alarm systems are governed by NFPA 72 (the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code), which is adopted by reference into most state and local fire and building codes. Like the NEC, NFPA 72 assigns precise technical meanings to terms that may sound familiar but carry specific legal and design consequences. Confusing a "supervisory signal" with a "trouble signal," or an "addressable" system with a "multiplex" system, leads to design errors, failed acceptance tests, and — in the worst case — a system that does not perform as intended during a fire.

Fire alarm designers, installers, and inspectors also work across overlapping codes — NFPA 72 for system design and performance, NFPA 70 (the NEC) for wiring methods and circuit classifications, NFPA 101 (the Life Safety Code) for occupant notification requirements, and UL standards for listed equipment. This glossary defines 55 of the most important terms an engineer, technician, or NICET candidate will encounter, organized alphabetically with code references where applicable.

A

Addressable System — NFPA 72
A fire alarm system in which each initiating device and notification appliance has its own unique digital address on a signaling line circuit, allowing the fire alarm control unit (FACU) to identify the exact device reporting an alarm, trouble, or supervisory condition. Addressable systems replace the zone-level location information of conventional systems with device-level and often room-level location text, which speeds emergency response and simplifies troubleshooting on large campuses.
Alarm Signal — NFPA 72
A signal indicating an emergency requiring immediate action, such as a signal indicative of fire. Alarm signals are the highest-priority signal type in a fire alarm system and must activate notification appliances, transmit to the supervising station (if monitored), and take any programmed control functions (door releases, HVAC shutdown, elevator recall).
Alarm Verification — NFPA 72
A feature that delays the alarm signal from a smoke detector for a brief period (up to 15 seconds per device, with a maximum total delay of one minute) to confirm the detector is still in alarm before annunciating a full building alarm. Alarm verification reduces nuisance alarms caused by transient smoke or dust, but it also delays notification, so its use is restricted by code and by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
Ampere-Hour (Ah)
The unit used to express standby battery capacity — the current a battery can deliver over a specified time before its voltage drops below a usable threshold. Fire alarm battery calculations multiply the system's standby current draw by the required standby time (typically 24 hours per NFPA 72, or 60 hours for some high-rise applications) and add the alarm current for the required alarm duration, then apply a derating factor for battery aging.
Annunciator — NFPA 72
A unit containing one or more indicator lamps, alphanumeric displays, or other equivalent means in which each indication provides status information about a circuit, condition, or location. Remote annunciators are typically installed at building entrances used by the fire department so responders can identify the alarm's location without entering the building to reach the main FACU.
Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
The organization, office, or individual responsible for enforcing the requirements of a code or standard, or for approving equipment, materials, an installation, or a procedure. For fire alarm systems this is typically the local fire marshal or fire department plans examiner, who has final authority over design interpretation, acceptance testing, and any deviations from the referenced codes.

B

Bell
An electromechanical audible notification appliance. Largely superseded by electronic horns and speakers in new construction, but still common in older installed systems that predate current notification appliance requirements.
Basic Fire Alarm System
A general term for a protected premises fire alarm system that provides detection, occupant notification, and (typically) monitoring by a supervising station, as distinguished from a household fire alarm system covered separately in NFPA 72 Chapter 29.

C

Candela (cd)
The unit of luminous intensity used to rate visual notification appliances (strobes). NFPA 72 Table 18.5.4.1 (or its successor tables) sets minimum candela ratings based on room size and mounting height so that a strobe is visible throughout the protected space. Common ratings are 15, 30, 75, and 110 cd, with higher ratings needed for larger rooms or corridors.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector
A device that detects the presence of carbon monoxide gas and initiates a distinct signal, separate from a fire alarm signal, per NFPA 72 Chapter 17. CO detection is increasingly integrated into combination smoke/CO detectors and is required in many jurisdictions in dwelling units with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.
Circuit Classification (Class A / Class B) — NFPA 72
A designation of the survivability and monitoring capability of an initiating device circuit, signaling line circuit, or notification appliance circuit wiring path. Class A circuits are wired in a loop that returns to the panel, so a single break still allows the circuit to operate via the redundant path (with trouble indication). Class B circuits are wired as a single run (a "home run") ending in an end-of-line resistor; a single break disables everything downstream of the break. Class A provides higher survivability at higher installed cost.
Combination Detector
A device that responds to more than one of the fire phenomena (heat, smoke, or products of combustion), or that employs more than one operating principle to sense one of these phenomena. Common examples include heat/smoke combination detectors and multi-criteria detectors that use both photoelectric and heat-sensing elements to reduce nuisance alarms.
Common Signaling Path
A monitored circuit path over which multiple signals may be carried, requiring that a single fault does not simultaneously disable more than the code-permitted amount of the system. This concept underlies signaling line circuit design in addressable systems, where a single SLC loop can serve up to the panel manufacturer's device limit, but code limits the number of devices that can be lost to a single ground fault or open circuit.

D

Detector Sensitivity
The threshold at which a smoke detector responds to obscuration (for photoelectric/ionization detectors) or rate-of-rise/fixed temperature (for heat detectors). NFPA 72 requires detector sensitivity to be tested at acceptance and periodically thereafter (typically via calibrated smoke or a manufacturer-approved test method) to confirm the detector remains within its listed sensitivity range, since dust and aging can drift sensitivity out of range.
Duct Detector
A smoke detector listed for installation in the airstream of an HVAC duct, used to shut down air handling equipment or activate smoke control sequences to prevent smoke recirculation throughout a building. Duct detectors are typically supervisory or alarm-initiating depending on the application (life safety vs. property protection) and are addressed by both NFPA 72 and NFPA 90A.

E

End-of-Line Device (EOL)
A resistor (or in some systems, a diode or specialized device) installed at the electrical end of a Class B initiating device circuit or notification appliance circuit to allow the control panel to supervise wiring continuity. If the circuit opens, the panel loses the current path through the EOL resistor and reports a trouble condition.
Evacuation Signal
An audible or visible signal, or both, used to initiate evacuation of the building or a designated area upon activation of the fire alarm system. In high-rise and other buildings using phased or partial evacuation strategies, the evacuation signal may differ by zone, coordinated with an alert (or "alert tone") signal for occupants not in the immediate danger zone.
Egress Notification
Occupant notification, via audible and visible appliances, along the paths of egress (corridors, stairwells, exits) intended to direct occupants toward safe exit from the building during a fire alarm condition.

F

Fire Alarm Control Unit (FACU) — NFPA 72
The system component that receives inputs from automatic and manual fire alarm devices and may supply power to detection devices and transponder(s) or off-premises transmitter(s); it may also provide transmission of alarm, supervisory, and trouble signals to notification appliances. The FACU is the "brain" of the system — often still called the panel — that processes device inputs and executes programmed outputs.
Fire Command Center (FCC) — NFPA 72 / IBC
The principal attended or unattended location where the status of the detection, alarm communications, and control systems is displayed, and from which the systems can be manually controlled. Required in high-rise buildings, the FCC typically houses the fire alarm annunciator, voice communication system controls, elevator status, and smoke control system status.
Firefighter's Telephone (Fire Phone)
A two-way communication system, either handset-based or dedicated jacks, allowing fire department personnel to communicate between the fire command center and remote points in the building (stairwells, elevator lobbies) during an emergency. Required in many high-rise applications under NFPA 72 Chapter 24 and local building codes.
Fire Alarm-Evacuation Signaling System
A general term describing a system that provides notification of a fire alarm event using an evacuation signal, distinguished from an alert-and-relocate voice system that uses a two-stage message strategy.
Flame Detector
A device that detects the infrared, ultraviolet, or visible radiant energy emitted by a flame. Used where fast flame detection is required — such as fuel storage areas or high-hazard industrial processes — flame detectors respond much faster than smoke or heat detectors but require unobstructed line of sight to the fire.

G

General Alarm
A signal to notify all building occupants of an alarm condition simultaneously, as opposed to a selective or zoned notification strategy used in phased evacuation.
Ground Fault
An unintentional electrical connection between a circuit conductor and earth ground (or panel chassis) that the FACU must detect and annunciate as a trouble condition. A single ground fault should not cause loss of protection on more than the code-permitted circuit; multiple simultaneous ground faults can defeat circuit supervision.

H

Heat Detector — NFPA 72
A fire detector that senses heat — either a fixed temperature threshold, a rate-of-rise in temperature (typically 15°F per minute), or a combination of both. Heat detectors are less sensitive than smoke detectors but are far more resistant to nuisance alarms from cooking, dust, or steam, making them the preferred choice in kitchens, garages, and other spaces prone to non-fire smoke or aerosol conditions.
High-Rise Building — NFPA 101 / IBC
A building with an occupied floor located more than 75 feet (in most model codes) above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access. High-rise buildings trigger enhanced fire alarm and life safety requirements, including voice evacuation systems, fire command centers, extended standby battery duration (often 60 hours per some jurisdictions' amendments), and firefighter smoke control override.
Horn/Strobe
A combination notification appliance that provides both an audible alarm tone and a visible strobe light from a single device, the most common notification appliance type installed in commercial buildings today.

I

Initiating Device — NFPA 72
A system component that originates transmission of a change-of-state condition, such as a smoke detector, heat detector, or manual fire alarm box (pull station). Initiating devices are the "inputs" to the fire alarm system, as opposed to notification appliances, which are the "outputs."
Initiating Device Circuit (IDC)
A circuit to which automatic or manual initiating devices are connected, where the signal received does not identify the individual device operated — used in conventional (non-addressable) systems where the panel only knows which zone, not which specific device, is in alarm.
Ionization Smoke Detector
A smoke detector that uses a small radioactive source to ionize air within a sensing chamber; smoke particles disrupt the ionization current and trigger an alarm. Ionization detectors respond faster to fast, flaming fires with small combustion particles, but are more prone to nuisance alarms from cooking, and are increasingly replaced by photoelectric detectors in code-driven installations.

M

Manual Fire Alarm Box (Pull Station) — NFPA 72
A manually operated device used to initiate an alarm signal. NFPA 72 requires pull stations to be located within a specified travel distance of exits and at each exit door, mounted at an accessible height (typically 42–48 inches per ADA and NFPA 72 coordination), and — in many jurisdictions — protected against unwanted activation with a listed cover.
Mass Notification System (MNS) — NFPA 72 Chapter 24
A system used to provide real-time information to occupants or emergency responders concerning emergencies beyond fire, such as severe weather, active shooter events, or chemical releases. MNS integrates with, but is a distinct function from, the fire alarm system, and requires a documented priority scheme when both systems could compete for the same notification appliances.
Monitoring (Central Station / Remote Supervising Station) — NFPA 72
The service by which alarm, supervisory, and trouble signals from a protected premises are transmitted to and received at a facility staffed 24/7, which then dispatches the appropriate response (fire department, service technician). UL 827 governs central station listing requirements.
Multiplex System
A signaling method for simultaneously transmitting and/or receiving multiple signals over a single circuit — the underlying technology behind addressable fire alarm systems' signaling line circuits.

N

NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies)
The organization that certifies fire alarm technicians and designers at Level I through Level IV in the Fire Alarm Systems program. Many AHJs require NICET Level II or III certification (or a licensed PE's stamp) for fire alarm system design and installation documents.
Notification Appliance — NFPA 72
A fire alarm system component such as a horn, bell, strobe, speaker, or combination device that provides audible, tactile, or visible outputs, or any combination thereof, to alert occupants of a fire alarm condition. Notification appliances are the "output" side of the system.
Notification Appliance Circuit (NAC)
A circuit or path directly connected to a notification appliance controller output that supplies power to notification appliances. NAC voltage drop calculations — accounting for wire resistance and total connected current — are one of the most common fire alarm design calculations, since excessive voltage drop causes strobes and horns to operate below their rated output.

O

Off-Premises Transmission
Transmission of alarm, supervisory, and trouble signals to a location away from the protected premises — a central station, remote supervising station, or the public fire service communications center — required for most commercial occupancies so that a response occurs even when the building is unoccupied.
Open Circuit
A break in circuit continuity that the FACU detects as a trouble condition on supervised circuits. A break anywhere on a Class B circuit disables all devices downstream of the break point until repaired.

P

Photoelectric Smoke Detector
A smoke detector that uses a light source and photosensitive sensor within a chamber; smoke particles scatter light onto the sensor and trigger an alarm. Photoelectric detectors respond faster to smoldering, slow-developing fires with larger smoke particles and are less prone to cooking-related nuisance alarms than ionization detectors.
Point of Connection
The location, generally at or near the fire alarm control unit, where an off-premises signal transmission device or a monitoring circuit is connected to the local system.
Positive Alarm Sequence (PAS) — NFPA 72
An automatic sequence that results in the delay of general alarm signal transmission for a period not to exceed 15 seconds during which an alarm-initiated response is confirmed by trained personnel, followed by an additional automatic alarm signal if not reset within 180 seconds. PAS is a code-permitted alternative to alarm verification for facilities with trained on-site staff who can quickly investigate and reset a system before it goes to full alarm.

R

Radiant Energy-Sensing Fire Detector
A device that detects radiant energy, such as ultraviolet, visible, or infrared, that is emitted as a product of combustion — the technical NFPA 72 term for what is commonly called a flame detector.
Rate-of-Rise Detector
A heat detector that responds when the temperature rises faster than a fixed rate (typically 15°F per minute), regardless of the absolute temperature reached — allowing faster response to fast-developing fires than a fixed-temperature-only detector, while still resisting nuisance response to normal, gradual temperature changes.
Restorable Device
A device whose sensing element is not ordinarily destroyed by operation in the fire signaling process, and which requires resetting rather than replacement after activation — most heat detectors and smoke detectors are restorable, while fixed-temperature fusible-link devices are typically non-restorable.

S

Signaling Line Circuit (SLC) — NFPA 72
A circuit or path between the control unit, transponder(s), or interfaces over which multiple signals are carried, or a circuit or path used for one or more relay control functions in one or both directions — the addressable communication loop connecting individually addressed devices to the FACU. Modern SLC loops can carry hundreds of individually addressed initiating and control devices on a single pair of wires.
Standby Power Supply — NFPA 72
A power source, typically sealed lead-acid or lithium batteries, that automatically supplies electrical power to the fire alarm system upon failure of the primary (utility) power source. NFPA 72 requires standby capacity for 24 hours of standby operation followed by 5 (or more, depending on system type) minutes of alarm operation as a baseline, with longer durations for some occupancies.
Supervisory Signal — NFPA 72
A signal indicating the need for action in connection with the supervision of guard tours, fire suppression systems or equipment, or the maintenance features of related systems — for example, a closed sprinkler control valve, low water tank level, or low air pressure on a dry-pipe system. Supervisory signals are distinct from alarm signals (indicating fire) and trouble signals (indicating an equipment fault); they indicate an impaired protective feature that needs correction.
Suppression System Interface
The connection between the fire alarm system and an automatic sprinkler or clean-agent suppression system, typically via a waterflow switch (alarm-initiating) and supervisory switches on control valves — allowing the fire alarm system to report both an activated sprinkler system and any impairment of that system.

T

Trouble Signal — NFPA 72
A signal initiated by the fire alarm system or device indicative of a fault in a monitored circuit or component, such as a wiring open circuit, ground fault, or loss of primary power. Trouble signals are lower priority than alarm or supervisory signals but must still be annunciated locally and, in monitored systems, transmitted off-premises within a code-specified time (typically within 200 seconds of the fault occurring, with restoral requirements too).
Transponder
A functional unit of a distributed fire alarm system used to communicate directly with the initiating devices, signaling line circuits, and notification appliance circuits and that communicates with a fire alarm control unit through a signaling line circuit or data network — used in networked/campus systems where a central FACU controls several building panels.

U

Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
A nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) that develops product safety standards and lists fire alarm equipment (UL 864 for control units, UL 268 for smoke detectors, UL 217 for single/multiple station smoke alarms, UL 1971 for visual notification appliances). NFPA 72 and the model building/fire codes require the use of listed equipment.

V

Visible Notification Appliance
A notification appliance, most commonly a xenon strobe, that alerts by emitting light. Required for public and common-use areas per ADA accessibility guidance, and rated in candela per NFPA 72 tables based on room size and mounting configuration (wall-mount vs. ceiling-mount).
Voice Evacuation System — NFPA 72
A fire alarm system with the capability to broadcast live or pre-recorded voice messages through speakers, in addition to or instead of tone-based notification appliances. Voice systems allow directed, phased, or selective evacuation messages, which is critical in high-rise buildings and large assembly occupancies where a simultaneous full-building alarm signal could cause dangerous corridor and stairwell congestion.
Voltage Drop
The reduction in voltage along a circuit conductor caused by wire resistance and current flow, calculated for notification appliance circuits to confirm every device on the circuit still receives sufficient voltage to operate at its rated output under worst-case (end-of-line, full-load) conditions.

W

Waterflow Switch
A device that detects water movement in a sprinkler system's piping and transmits an alarm signal to the fire alarm system — the primary means by which an activated fire sprinkler system generates a building fire alarm.
Wireless Fire Alarm System
A system using radio frequency (RF) communication between initiating devices, notification appliances, and the FACU in place of hardwired conductors, listed under UL 864's supplement for wireless protection. Wireless systems are increasingly used in historic buildings, renovations, and additions where running new conduit is impractical, subject to AHJ approval and code-required supervision of the RF link.

Z

Zone — NFPA 72
A defined area within a protected premises, either physical (a floor or section of a building) or logical (a group of devices), used to organize annunciation and, in some systems, notification and control sequencing. Conventional systems use hardware zones (one IDC per zone); addressable systems use software-defined zones that can be reconfigured without rewiring.
