The stress-strain curve and what it reveals — elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and ductility — plus hardness testing and its correlation to strength, and toughness & impact resistance.
Modules 1 and 2 predicted, in general terms, whether a material would be ductile or brittle, stiff or compliant, from its bonding type and crystal structure. This module turns that qualitative prediction into the specific numbers an engineer actually designs against: how the tensile test produces the stress-strain curve, and how elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and ductility are each read off different parts of that one curve. It then covers hardness testing — Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers — and how it correlates to strength, and closes with toughness and the Charpy V-notch impact test.
By the end of this module you should be able to explain why design codes size parts against yield strength rather than ultimate tensile strength, and why no single property in this module is a standalone measure of a material's quality — the multi-property trade-off Module 14's material selection module returns to in full.
