Testing Methods

Destructive testing (tensile, hardness, impact, fatigue) versus non-destructive testing and evaluation (radiography, ultrasonic testing, dye penetrant, magnetic particle inspection), and how to choose the right test for a given material qualification or in-service inspection need.

Destructive testing trades a sample for a precise, absolute property measurement; non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT/NDE) trades that precision for the ability to inspect the actual part that goes into service. This module works through tensile, hardness, impact, and fatigue testing on the destructive side, then radiography, ultrasonic testing, dye penetrant, and magnetic particle inspection on the NDT/NDE side, with a consistent focus on what each method actually reveals and where each one falls short.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a material can pass a room-temperature tensile test and still fail by brittle fracture in cold service, why fatigue testing is inherently statistical rather than a single-number result, and how to choose between ultrasonic testing, radiography, dye penetrant, and magnetic particle inspection for a specific suspected defect — the exact judgment Module 17's troubleshooting scenarios put into practice.
