Why Plumbing Terminology Matters
Plumbing codes — the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) — are legal documents adopted by state and local jurisdictions, and like the electrical and building codes they govern, they use precise, defined terms that often differ from everyday usage. A "vent stack" is not the same thing as a "stack vent," a "fixture unit" is not a fixture count, and "air gap" has a specific dimensional meaning that determines whether a cross-connection is legally protected. Getting these definitions wrong on a plan set leads to plan-review rejections; getting them wrong in the field leads to failed inspections and, in the worst cases, contaminated potable water or sewer gas entering occupied space.
This glossary covers 55 of the most important terms a plumbing designer, engineer, contractor, or inspector encounters daily, organized alphabetically with code references (IPC and UPC section numbers, ASSE and ASME standards) and plain-language explanations.
A
- Air Gap — IPC 202 / ASME A112.1.2
- The unobstructed vertical distance through free atmospheric space between the lowest opening of a water supply outlet and the flood-level rim of a fixture or receptor. An air gap is the most reliable form of backflow prevention because there is no physical connection for contaminated water to travel back through — it simply cannot reach the supply outlet. A kitchen faucet spout positioned above the flood rim of the sink is a classic air gap.
- Air Chamber — IPC 604.9
- A vertical, capped section of pipe that traps a cushion of air to absorb the pressure surge (water hammer) created when a fast-closing valve or solenoid (like a washing machine or dishwasher valve) stops flow abruptly. Modern designs typically use a mechanical water hammer arrestor (ASSE 1010) instead, since simple air chambers can waterlog over time and lose their cushioning effect.
- Anti-Siphon Device — IPC 608
- Any device that prevents backsiphonage — the reverse flow of used, contaminated water into the potable water supply caused by negative pressure in the supply piping. Vacuum breakers and air gaps are both anti-siphon devices, though they protect against different failure mechanisms.
- Available Water Pressure — IPC Appendix E
- The pressure remaining at the highest and most remote fixture after accounting for elevation change (static loss) and friction loss through the piping system, starting from the pressure delivered by the utility or well pump. Water supply sizing calculations (via the Hunter's curve/fixture unit method) work backward from a minimum required residual pressure at the fixture, typically 8–15 psi depending on fixture type.
B
- Backflow — IPC 202
- The reversal of the normal, intended direction of flow in a piping system, allowing water of questionable or contaminated quality to enter the potable water supply. Backflow occurs by two mechanisms: backpressure (downstream pressure exceeds supply pressure) and backsiphonage (negative pressure in the supply line draws water backward).
- Backflow Preventer — IPC 608 / ASSE 1013, 1015, 1020, 1024
- A mechanical device installed in a water supply line to prevent backflow. Common types include the reduced pressure zone (RPZ) assembly, the double check valve assembly (DCVA), the pressure vacuum breaker (PVB), and the atmospheric vacuum breaker (AVB) — each rated for a different degree of hazard and application (irrigation, fire sprinkler, boiler feed, etc.).
- Branch (Drain) — IPC 202
- A drain pipe that does not receive discharge from any other branch, other than a fixture branch, and connects to a main or another branch of the building drain or building sewer. Distinguishes intermediate collection piping from the fixture drain (closest to the fixture) and the main (largest, most downstream pipe).
- Branch Interval — IPC 202
- A vertical measurement of 8 feet (2438 mm) or more along a soil or waste stack within which the horizontal branches from one floor or story are connected. Branch intervals matter because IPC Table 710.1(1) sizes stacks based partly on the number of branch intervals, and stack venting requirements change with height.
- Building Drain — IPC 202
- The lowest piping of a drainage system that receives the discharge from soil, waste, and other drainage pipes inside a building and conveys it to the building sewer, beginning 30 inches (or 2 feet per UPC) outside the building wall. Everything downstream of the building drain, outside the building, is the building sewer.
- Building Sewer — IPC 202
- The piping that connects the building drain to the public sewer, private sewer, individual sewage disposal system, or other point of disposal, beginning outside the building wall. Building sewers are typically owned and maintained by the property owner up to the point of connection with the public main.
- Building Trap — IPC 202
- A device, fitting, or assembly of fittings installed in the building drain to prevent circulation of air between the drainage system of the building and the building sewer. Building traps are prohibited by most modern codes (IPC 1002.4) because they can cause siphonage problems and are largely unnecessary given proper individual fixture trapping and venting.
C
- Cleanout — IPC 202, 708
- An accessible opening in the drainage system used for the removal of obstructions, fitted with a removable plug or cap. Cleanouts are required at the base of every stack, at changes of direction greater than 45 degrees, and at maximum intervals along horizontal runs (100 feet for pipes 4 inches and smaller per IPC 708.3.1) so that a drain snake or auger can be run through the line without tearing out walls or slabs.
- Combination Waste and Vent System — IPC 913
- A specially designed system of waste piping that permits a fixture drain (typically a floor drain or island sink) to also serve as a vent by using oversized, minimally sloped piping so air can move both directions inside the same pipe. Used where conventional individual venting is impractical, such as island kitchen sinks.
- Common Vent — IPC 202
- A vent connecting at the junction of two fixture drains and serving as a vent for both fixtures. Common venting is permitted where two fixture drains connect at the same level (back-to-back or side-by-side) — for example, two lavatories sharing a single vent stub-up.
- Cross-Connection — IPC 202
- Any physical connection or arrangement between two otherwise separate piping systems, one of which contains potable water and the other of which contains water of unknown or questionable safety, whereby there may be a flow from one system to the other. Cross-connections are the underlying hazard that backflow preventers, air gaps, and vacuum breakers are all designed to eliminate.
D
- Developed Length — IPC 202
- The length of a pipeline measured along the centerline of the pipe and fittings, following every bend and turn rather than a straight-line distance. Vent sizing tables (IPC Table 916.1) size vents by developed length because friction and air resistance accumulate through fittings, not just straight runs.
- DFU (Drainage Fixture Unit) — IPC 202, Table 709.1
- A measure of the probable discharge into the drainage system by a particular type of fixture, expressed as a value relative to a standard fixture (historically, one DFU ≈ 1 cubic foot per minute of flow). DFU values, not fixture counts, are what actually size building drains, branches, and stacks — a water closet is rated at roughly 3–6 DFU depending on flush type, while a lavatory is rated at only 1 DFU. Total DFU load is looked up against pipe-sizing tables to select drain diameter.
- Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) — ASSE 1015
- A backflow preventer consisting of two independently operating, spring-loaded check valves with test cocks, used for low-to-moderate hazard applications such as fire sprinkler systems and irrigation. Less protective than an RPZ assembly (which has a relief valve that discharges to atmosphere if either check fails) but does not waste water and does not require an air gap drain.
- Drain, Waste, and Vent (DWV) — general industry term
- The umbrella term for the entire non-potable side of a plumbing system: the pipes that carry wastewater away from fixtures (drain and waste) and the pipes that admit air to keep traps sealed and pressures balanced (vent). "DWV pipe" specifically refers to the thinner-wall PVC/ABS piping rated for gravity drainage, as distinct from pressure-rated supply pipe.
- Drainage System — IPC 202
- All the piping within public or private premises that conveys sewage, rainwater, or other liquid wastes to a point of disposal, including sanitary drainage, storm drainage, and (where combined) both together. Split into "sanitary" (fixture waste and sewage) and "storm" (roof and site runoff) systems, which are almost always required to be kept separate.
F
- Fixture Branch — IPC 202
- A supply pipe between the fixture supply and a main water distribution pipe, or between the fixture supply and a fixture group main. The fixture branch is the last leg of piping before the individual stop valve or fixture connection.
- Fixture Drain — IPC 202
- The drain from the trap of a fixture to a junction with any other drain pipe. Distinct from the "trap arm," which is the specific horizontal segment between the trap weir and the vent connection, subject to its own maximum-length limits to prevent self-siphonage.
- Flood Level Rim — IPC 202
- The edge of a receptacle from which water overflows. Air gap distances, backflow-preventer clearances, and fixture spill-over calculations are all referenced to the flood level rim, not to the bottom or drain of the fixture.
- Flow Rate — general / IPC Table 604.3
- The quantity of water flowing through a pipe, fixture, or fitting per unit time, usually expressed in gallons per minute (gpm). Fixture maximum flow rates are regulated separately by federal WaterSense/EPAct standards (e.g., 1.5 gpm for standard lavatory faucets, 2.5 gpm for showerheads) and are a distinct concept from the fixture unit values used for pipe sizing.
G
- Grade (Slope) — IPC 202
- The fall (pitch) of a line of pipe, in reference to a horizontal plane, expressed as a fraction or percentage — for example, 1/4 inch per foot (2%) is the standard minimum grade for drainage piping 2.5 inches and smaller (IPC 704.1). Inadequate slope causes solids to settle and clog the line; excessive slope can outrun the liquid, leaving solids stranded ("self-scouring velocity" is lost).
- Grease Interceptor — IPC 202, 1003
- A plumbing appurtenance or appliance designed to intercept and prevent the passage of fats, oils, and greases (FOG) into the drainage system, typically required for commercial kitchens. Sized per PDI-G101 (hydromechanical, high-flow-rate units) or by capacity in pounds (gravity interceptors), and require scheduled pumping to remain effective.
- Grey Water (Graywater) — IPC 202
- Wastewater from bathtubs, showers, lavatories, clothes washers, and laundry sinks — explicitly excluding water that has come into contact with toilet waste (blackwater). Graywater reuse systems for irrigation or toilet flushing are regulated separately (IPC Chapter 13 / Appendix C) and require dedicated, clearly labeled piping to prevent cross-connection with the potable system.
H
- Hunter's Curve — IPC Appendix E (historical basis)
- The probability-based statistical method developed by Dr. Roy Hunter in the 1940s that converts fixture unit totals into an estimated peak simultaneous demand flow rate, recognizing that not all fixtures in a building operate at the same instant. This is the theoretical basis for the water supply fixture unit (WSFU) tables still used in IPC Appendix E and UPC Appendix A today.
- Hydrostatic Test — IPC 312
- A pressure test performed on new drain, waste, and vent piping (typically filled with water to a 10-foot head, or the top of the highest stack) or on water supply piping (pressurized to at least the system working pressure) to verify there are no leaks before the system is concealed or placed into service. Required by code before rough-in inspection sign-off.
I
- Indirect Waste Pipe — IPC 202, 802
- A waste pipe that does not connect directly with the drainage system but discharges into the drainage system through an air gap into a trap, fixture, receptor, or interceptor. Required for equipment like ice machines, food-prep sinks, and steam kettles where a direct connection could allow drainage system contents or sewer gas to enter food-contact equipment.
- Interceptor — IPC 202, 1003
- A device designed and installed to separate and retain deleterious, hazardous, or undesirable matter (grease, oil, sand, or other solids) from normal wastes while permitting normal sewage to discharge into the drainage system. Grease interceptors, oil/sand interceptors, and gasoline interceptors are all subtypes.
L
- Loop Vent — IPC 202
- A vent that connects to a horizontal branch drain and loops back to connect with a stack vent or vent stack, rather than rising individually from each fixture. Loop and circuit vents allow a single vent to serve multiple fixtures on the same horizontal branch, reducing the number of vent penetrations through the roof.
P
- P-Trap — IPC 202, 1002
- A trap shaped like the letter "P" that is the standard trap for sinks, lavatories, and most fixtures without an integral trap. It retains a water seal in its lower bend that blocks sewer gas from entering the occupied space, while the trap's shape allows it to be vented and cleaned via a removable cleanout plug.
- PEX (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) — ASTM F876, F877
- A flexible plastic piping material widely used for water supply distribution because it resists bursting from freezing, requires fewer fittings due to its flexibility, and can be installed with crimp, clamp, or expansion-type connections. PEX has largely displaced copper for residential and much commercial water supply piping due to lower material and labor cost.
- Point of Use — general term
- Refers to equipment (like a water heater, filter, or backflow preventer) installed close to or at the specific fixture it serves, rather than centrally for the whole building. A point-of-use water heater serves a single remote fixture to avoid long hot-water wait times and standby losses in a long branch line.
R
- Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) Assembly — ASSE 1013 / IPC 608
- The highest-hazard-rated mechanical backflow preventer, consisting of two independent check valves separated by a reduced-pressure zone monitored by a relief valve that discharges to atmosphere (via an air gap) if either check valve fails or pressure in the zone rises too close to supply pressure. Required for high-hazard cross-connections such as boiler feed, chemical feed, and irrigation systems with fertilizer injection.
- Relief Vent — IPC 202, 908
- A vent whose primary function is to provide circulation of air between the drainage and vent systems, supplementing the venting of a stack, typically used on tall stacks (per building drainage table requirements) to relieve pressure fluctuations that a single stack vent cannot handle alone.
- Return Offset — IPC 202
- A pair of two opposite offsets in a soil or waste stack, so positioned as to bring the vertical piping back to the same alignment. Return offsets require special consideration in stack sizing because they create additional turbulence and back-pressure at the offset fittings.
- Riser — general industry term
- A vertical water supply pipe that extends one full story or more to convey water to branches or fixtures. Often used in the context of "riser diagram," an isometric or schematic drawing showing the vertical piping runs through a multi-story building.
S
- Sanitary Sewer — general/municipal term
- A sewer used to convey sewage (fixture and toilet waste) exclusively, as distinguished from a storm sewer that conveys only rainwater. Most modern jurisdictions require separated sanitary and storm systems to prevent overloading treatment plants during storm events (a combined sewer overflow, or CSO, is the pollution event that occurs when a combined system exceeds capacity).
- Septic Tank — IPC Appendix I / local health code
- A buried, watertight tank designed to receive sewage, separate settleable and floating solids from liquid, digest organic matter through anaerobic bacterial action, and allow the clarified liquid effluent to discharge to a soil absorption (drain) field. Used where no public sewer connection is available.
- Sewage Ejector / Sump Pump — IPC 712
- A mechanical device used to lift sewage or wastewater (including solids, in the case of a sewage ejector) from a fixture or drain located below the level of the gravity sewer to a point where it can discharge by gravity, such as a basement bathroom below the main sewer invert.
- Slip Joint — IPC 605.7
- A mechanical compression-type connection, typically found on trap and tailpiece assemblies under sinks, that permits disassembly without cutting the pipe. Slip joints are only permitted on trap and drain connections that remain accessible — they cannot be concealed inside a wall.
- Soil Pipe — IPC 202
- A pipe that conveys sewage containing fecal matter to the building drain or building sewer, as distinguished from a "waste pipe" that conveys only liquid waste free of fecal matter (from sinks, showers, etc.). Historically an important distinction for pipe material selection; modern DWV codes largely size and treat both the same.
- Stack — IPC 202
- The vertical main of a system of soil, waste, or vent piping extending one or more stories, with or without offsets, to which horizontal branches may connect. "Stack" alone usually refers to a soil or waste stack; combined with a modifier ("vent stack," "stack vent") it identifies the pipe's specific venting function.
- Stack Vent — IPC 202
- The extension of a soil or waste stack above the highest horizontal drain connected to the stack, terminating in open air (usually through the roof). Frequently confused with a "vent stack" — the stack vent is the continuation of the drain stack itself upward past its last fixture connection, while a vent stack is a separate, dedicated vertical vent pipe.
- Storm Drainage System — IPC Chapter 11
- A drainage system that carries rainwater, surface water, condensate, and similar discharges from a structure or site to a point of disposal such as a storm sewer, drainage channel, or approved outfall, kept physically separate from the sanitary drainage system. Roof drains, area drains, and scuppers are all part of a building's storm drainage system.
- Sump — IPC 202
- A tank or pit that receives sewage or liquid waste, located below the normal grade of the gravity drainage system and needing mechanical means (a sewage ejector or sump pump) to discharge its contents to a normal gravity drainage system.
T
- Trap — IPC 202, 1002
- A fitting or device designed to provide a liquid seal that prevents the passage of sewer gas without materially affecting the flow of sewage or wastewater through the trap. Every fixture connected to the drainage system must have its own trap (unless it has an integral trap, like a water closet), and every trap must be protected by a vent to prevent siphonage of its seal.
- Trap Arm — IPC 202
- The portion of a fixture drain between a trap's weir and the vent fitting connection, maximum length limited by pipe size and slope (IPC Table 909.1) to prevent self-siphonage — if the trap arm is too long relative to its slope and diameter, the flow of water leaving the fixture can pull the trap seal out with it.
- Trap Seal — IPC 202, 1002.4
- The vertical distance between the crown weir and the top of the dip in a trap, through which water must pass to seal the trap against sewer gas — code requires a minimum trap seal depth of 2 inches and a maximum of 4 inches. A trap seal can be lost through evaporation (in rarely used fixtures), siphonage (from an inadequately vented trap arm), or momentum/wind effect (in tall stacks without adequate venting), any of which allows sewer gas to enter the building.
V
- Vacuum Breaker — IPC 608 / ASSE 1001, 1011, 1035
- A backflow prevention device that admits atmospheric air into the water supply line to break a vacuum, thereby preventing backsiphonage. Hose-bibb vacuum breakers (ASSE 1011) are the small brass devices commonly seen threaded onto outdoor hose connections; they are inexpensive but only protect against backsiphonage, not backpressure.
- Vent Stack — IPC 202
- A vertical pipe installed primarily to provide circulation of air to and from the drainage system, connected at its base to the building drain (or a soil/waste stack) and extending independently through the roof, without receiving the discharge of any fixtures. Distinct from a "stack vent," which is the upward extension of a drain stack itself — a vent stack is a wholly separate vertical vent pipe run alongside the drain stack.
- Vent Terminal — IPC 903
- The open-air termination point of a vent pipe, typically through the roof, subject to minimum clearances from windows, doors, and air intakes (IPC 903.1) to prevent sewer gas odors from entering occupied space or mechanical air intakes.
- Vertical Wet Vent — IPC 202, 913
- A wet vent that is vertical in orientation and receives the discharge of fixture drains from other fixtures above it while still providing venting for the fixtures connected below. Wet venting allows a single pipe to carry both drainage and venting function for multiple fixtures, reducing the number of individual vent pipes required.
W
- Waste Pipe — IPC 202
- A drain pipe conveying only liquid waste free of fecal matter — from lavatories, sinks, tubs, and similar fixtures — as distinguished from a "soil pipe" that conveys fecal matter. The distinction is largely historical in modern practice, since DWV pipe sizing and material selection typically treat both categories the same way.
- Water Hammer — IPC 604.9 / ASSE 1010
- The banging or shuddering noise and associated pressure spike caused by a sudden change in the velocity of water in a pipe, typically when a fast-closing valve (a solenoid valve on a washer or dishwasher, or a quick-closing faucet) abruptly stops flow, sending a pressure shock wave back through the piping. Water hammer arrestors (ASSE 1010), sized and located per manufacturer instructions, absorb this shock and are required near quick-closing valves.
- Water Service Pipe — IPC 202
- The pipe from the water main, meter, or other source of water supply to the water distribution system inside the building — the plumbing equivalent of the electrical "service entrance conductors." Everything downstream, inside the building, is the water distribution system.
- Water Supply Fixture Unit (WSFU) — IPC Table E103.3(2), (3)
- A relative measure of the probable hydraulic demand a fixture places on the water supply system, used (via Hunter's curve or the Appendix E tables) to convert a building's total fixture count into an estimated peak demand flow rate for sizing the water service and distribution piping. Distinct from a DFU, which measures drainage load rather than supply demand.
- Wet Vent — IPC 202, 913
- A vent that also serves as a drain for one or more fixtures, carrying both wastewater and air within the same pipe under specific size, slope, and fixture-count limitations. Wet venting reduces the amount of dedicated vent piping needed, particularly common in bathroom groups where the lavatory drain wet-vents the water closet.
