What Network Engineers Do
Network engineers design the communication backbone of organizations. This encompasses structured cabling (copper and fiber per TIA-568), LAN/WAN switching and routing, wireless networks (Wi-Fi 6/6E, cellular), network security (firewalls, VPNs, NAC), and unified communications (VoIP, video).
In building construction projects, low-voltage / network engineers prepare network design drawings showing telecommunications room layouts, cable pathways, equipment racks, and wireless access point placement. They must understand BICSI standards for cabling infrastructure and coordinate with electrical engineers for conduit and power (including PoE calculations for IP cameras, phones, and access points).
Enterprise network engineers work with Cisco, Juniper, Aruba, and other vendor equipment, configuring VLANs, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), QoS, and network monitoring. Cloud networking (SD-WAN, SASE, AWS/Azure networking) is increasingly important, blurring the line between traditional network engineering and cloud architecture.
