What Renewable Energy Engineers Do
Renewable energy engineers design the systems that generate and store clean energy. Solar PV design is the most common specialty — engineers size arrays, select inverters and racking, calculate string configurations, and design the AC and DC electrical systems per NEC Article 690. They use software like PVsyst or Aurora Solar for energy yield analysis and shading studies.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are a fast-growing specialty, with engineers designing systems ranging from small commercial behind-the-meter installations to utility-scale projects with hundreds of megawatt-hours of capacity. Microgrid engineering combines generation sources (solar, diesel, natural gas, battery) with sophisticated controls to create resilient, often islanded power systems for campuses, data centers, military bases, and remote communities. Renewable energy engineers must understand utility interconnection requirements (IEEE 1547) and work with utilities on grid studies for larger projects.
