The Problem 800 VDC Is Trying to Solve

Today's dominant data center power architecture is AC-based: power arrives, gets converted, distributed, and ultimately converted again — multiple times — before it reaches the DC voltage a server's internal components actually use. Each conversion stage introduces some power loss as heat, and at the power densities modern AI GPU racks demand (see How Much Power Does an AI GPU Rack Use?), even small percentage losses at each stage add up to a meaningful amount of wasted power and additional heat the cooling system has to remove. 800 VDC architecture is an emerging alternative aimed directly at this problem: distributing power as high-voltage DC much further into the facility, reducing the number of conversion stages between the utility and the rack, and cutting the cumulative losses that come with each one.
