Roads & Site Civil Design

Road geometric design (horizontal and vertical curves, sight distance), flexible vs. rigid pavement, parking lot layout, ADA accessibility requirements, and site utility coordination.

Road geometric design translates a design speed into physical curve geometry — but a curve that satisfies the minimum-radius formula can still be unsafe if it was never checked against the sight distance that same design speed requires. This module works through horizontal and vertical curve design and stopping sight distance, contrasts how flexible asphalt and rigid concrete pavement carry load to the subgrade differently, and covers parking lot layout, the specific numeric ADA slope thresholds that govern accessible parking and routes, and how road, grading, and utility design have to be coordinated together rather than finalized one at a time.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why sanitary sewer invert elevations are typically locked in before road grading is finalized, and why the 1:48 ADA slope maximum for accessible parking and routes is stricter than the cross-slope many site plans default to — and has to be checked against the grading plan explicitly rather than assumed.
