Real Project: Bridge Approach

A bridge approach slab and abutment case study addressing the classic “bump at the bridge” problem — worked embankment consolidation settlement, an approach slab designed to span unsupported, and load-transfer detailing at both the abutment and roadway ends.

The project brief: a two-lane highway bridge needs an approach slab and abutment detail solving the most common bridge maintenance complaint there is — the jolt drivers feel where a settling embankment meets a non-settling, deep-founded bridge structure. This project is the program's clearest example of a structural detail designed specifically to accommodate a geotechnical process the engineer can't prevent, only anticipate.

This module walks the whole design the way a practicing bridge engineer would: a one-dimensional consolidation settlement calculation quantifying the actual “bump,” the design philosophy behind spanning the approach slab across that settlement zone as if unsupported, the AASHTO live-load flexural design of the slab itself, and the dowel and sleeper-slab detailing that ties it to the abutment on one end and the roadway pavement on the other.
