Medical Gas Overview

Medical gas systems (oxygen, medical air, vacuum, WAGD), NFPA 99 as the governing standard, source equipment and zone valve basics, and the ASSE 6010/6020/6030 certification series required to install, inspect, and verify these systems.

A medical gas system's failure can be a direct patient-safety event rather than a property-damage problem, which is why it runs as a genuinely parallel discipline governed by NFPA 99 (the Health Care Facilities Code) rather than the IPC or UPC chapters covering the rest of this program. This module covers NFPA 99's Level 1/2/3 facility risk classification, the medical gas types (oxygen, medical air, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, vacuum, and WAGD/AGSS) and why each runs on its own dedicated piping, the Type K/L copper and brazing requirements, zone valve box placement, the three-tier alarm system, and the ASSE 6000 series that separates installation, inspection, and independent final verification into distinct, non-overlapping roles.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why ASSE 6010, 6020, and 6030 are deliberately separate credentials rather than one generalist certification — a genuine plumbing trade qualification specific to medical gas piping, not related to information-security certifications that happen to share similar naming conventions.
