Real Project: Municipal Water Treatment Plant Upgrade

An 8 MGD conventional treatment plant case study — worked capacity analysis, a filtration train upgrade to 12 MGD, hydraulic checks on flocculation, sedimentation, and clearwell disinfection contact time, and a high-service pump upgrade sized to firm capacity.

The project brief: a municipal utility's 20-year master plan projects maximum-day demand growing from 8 MGD to 12 MGD, and the existing conventional treatment plant — coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, four rapid sand filters, a clearwell, and high-service pumps — has to be upgraded to meet it. Rather than scaling every unit process up by the same percentage, this module walks each stage of the train independently to find out which ones actually become the bottleneck at the new flow.

This module works the full capacity audit the way a real design engineer would: firm-capacity filter sizing, a flocculation and sedimentation hydraulic check that leads to a mixing and tube-settler retrofit instead of new concrete, a clearwell CT check that shows one unit process needs no modification at all, and a high-service pump upgrade sized to the N-1 max-day-plus-fire-flow condition.
