Module 14 · Sustainability

Sustainability

Water reuse and reclamation, energy efficiency in treatment plants, green infrastructure as both a stormwater and sustainability strategy, lifecycle cost, triple-bottom-line thinking, and climate resilience.

Sustainability is not an add-on layer applied after a design is otherwise finished — it changes which alternative gets selected in the first place. This module covers water reuse and reclamation as a supply strategy, energy efficiency as a treatment-plant design and operating discipline, green infrastructure as a stormwater strategy that also delivers sustainability benefits, and the lifecycle-cost and triple-bottom-line frameworks that let sustainability-oriented alternatives be compared against conventional designs on the same analytical footing.

By the end of this module you should be able to quantify a sustainability-oriented design alternative on lifecycle cost, capacity, and regulatory grounds — not just argue for it qualitatively — the same rigor Module 16's infrastructure design content applies to any other design decision.
