Describing Technical Projects and Quantifying Impact

The single highest-leverage improvement most engineering resumes need is replacing vague responsibility statements with specific, quantified project descriptions. "Designed electrical systems for commercial buildings" tells a reviewer almost nothing verifiable; "Designed the electrical distribution system for a 45,000 sq ft commercial office building, including a 480Y/277V service, panel schedules for 12 branch circuit panels, and NEC Article 220 load calculations, reducing estimated connected load by 8% versus the initial design through fixture and equipment selection" gives a reviewer concrete, specific technical substance to evaluate — the building size, the voltage system, the specific code article applied, and a quantified outcome.

Quantifying impact doesn't always mean a dollar figure or percentage — for engineering work, quantification can mean the scale of a system (megawatts, square footage, number of components), the specific standards or codes applied, the software and analysis methods used, or a measurable performance outcome (reduced cycle time, passed a specific test or certification, met a specific tolerance or safety margin). The goal is always the same: give a technical reviewer enough specific detail to actually assess the substance and difficulty of the work, rather than making them take a vague claim on faith.

The Technical Skills Section: What to Include and How to Organize It

A technical skills section works best organized by category rather than as one long undifferentiated list — separating software/tools (SolidWorks, ETAP, MATLAB, Revit), standards and codes (NEC, ASCE 7, NFPA 72), and technical methods or domains (finite element analysis, PLC programming, structural load calculations) helps a reviewer quickly scan for the specific competencies relevant to a given role, rather than making them parse a flat list to find what they're actually looking for. Listing software or skills you've only briefly encountered as though you have deep proficiency is a common and risky mistake — a technical interview will typically probe listed skills in real depth, and a mismatch between a resume's claimed proficiency and an interview's demonstrated proficiency is a fast, credible signal that undermines trust in the rest of the resume too.

ATS Systems and Keyword Matching — What Actually Matters

Most engineering job applications, especially at larger companies, are first screened by an applicant tracking system (ATS) — software that parses a resume and scores or filters it based on keyword matches against the job description before a human reviewer ever sees it. This is why matching the specific terminology used in a job posting matters practically, not just stylistically: if a posting specifically asks for "finite element analysis" experience and a resume only says "structural simulation," an ATS keyword match can fail even though the underlying experience is genuinely relevant — a real, avoidable filtering-out risk that has nothing to do with actual qualification.

The practical response is not to stuff a resume with irrelevant keywords (which a human reviewer will notice and penalize once the resume passes ATS screening) but to genuinely mirror a job posting's specific technical terminology wherever your actual experience legitimately supports it — using "PLC programming" instead of "automation coding" if that's the exact phrase the posting uses and it's genuinely what you did, for instance. Resume formatting also matters for ATS parsing specifically: heavily designed templates with tables, text boxes, columns, or unusual fonts can parse incorrectly or lose information entirely when read by ATS software, which is why a clean, simple, single-column format — while sometimes viewed as visually plain — is generally the safer practical choice for a document that has to survive automated parsing before a human ever sees it.

Tailoring a Resume by Career Stage and Discipline

An entry-level engineering resume, with limited or no full-time professional experience, should lean more heavily on relevant coursework, capstone or senior design projects (described with the same specific, quantified detail as professional project experience), internships, and any hands-on technical work (student design competitions, personal projects, relevant lab work) — the goal is demonstrating genuine technical capability and hands-on experience with real tools and problems, even without a long professional track record. A mid-career or senior engineering resume should shift emphasis toward the scope and complexity of projects led or contributed to, licensure and certifications (PE, specific industry certifications), and increasingly, evidence of technical leadership — mentoring, design review responsibility, or cross-discipline coordination — alongside the core technical substance.

Different engineering disciplines also have discipline-specific resume expectations worth being aware of: civil and structural engineering resumes typically emphasize PE licensure status prominently given how central licensure is to that field's career progression; software engineering resumes often include a portfolio or GitHub link as standard practice in a way other engineering disciplines generally don't; and disciplines with mandatory industry certifications (NICET for fire alarm/fire suppression design, specific OSHA or safety certifications in industrial roles) should list current certification levels explicitly and prominently, since they're often a hard prerequisite screening criterion rather than just a nice-to-have skill.
