What Electronics Design Engineers Do
Electronics design engineers work across the stack from raw silicon to finished board. On the IC/ASIC side, they define architecture, write RTL in Verilog or VHDL, run synthesis and place-and-route, and verify timing closure before tape-out — often specializing narrowly as a front-end (RTL/verification) or back-end (physical design/DFT) engineer on a large chip team. FPGA engineers do similar digital design work but target reconfigurable logic instead of committing to silicon, which makes FPGAs the default choice for prototyping, low-volume production, and applications needing field-updatable logic. On the board side, PCB design engineers translate a schematic into a manufacturable layout — placing components, routing traces, and managing impedance and layer stackup for signal integrity — while analog and mixed-signal engineers design amplifiers, filters, power supplies, and data converters that bridge the real world and digital logic.
Day to day, this work is dominated by a specific toolchain. IC and ASIC engineers rely on EDA suites from Cadence (Virtuoso, Innovus) and Synopsys (Design Compiler, PrimeTime) for schematic capture, simulation, synthesis, and static timing analysis. PCB engineers use Altium Designer or KiCad (with OrCAD and Eagle also common) to lay out boards and check design rules before sending Gerber files to a fab house. Nearly all digital design flows through Verilog or VHDL simulation and synthesis, verified against testbenches before committing to expensive silicon or board spins. Because a chip tape-out or board respin can cost from tens of thousands to millions of dollars and take months, verification and design-rule checking consume as much engineering time as the original design.
A defining feature of the discipline is its dependence on foundry and fab relationships: ASIC and IC engineers must design within the process design kit (PDK) rules of a specific foundry (TSMC, GlobalFoundries, Samsung), while PCB engineers must respect the capabilities of their contract manufacturer for trace width, via size, and layer count. Many electronics design engineers also work at the embedded systems boundary, writing firmware or interfacing digital logic with microcontrollers and sensors. Specializations include digital IC design, analog/mixed-signal IC design, FPGA/embedded systems engineering, PCB and signal-integrity engineering, and DFT (design-for-test) engineering — each drawing on a different slice of circuit theory, HDL fluency, and fabrication knowledge.
