P&IDs

Why the P&ID is the plant's master reference document, how it differs from a PFD, ISA-5.1 equipment and instrument symbology, reading equipment tags and line numbers, and keeping the drawing configuration-controlled as a living document.

A Piping and Instrumentation Diagram is the one document every operator, maintenance technician, safety reviewer, and process engineer treats as ground truth for how a unit is actually built and controlled. This module works through the PFD-to-P&ID relationship, ISA-5.1 equipment and instrument symbology, how to decode equipment tags like P-201A and line numbers like 6"-P-1042-A1, instrument bubbles and their letter codes and mounting-location line styles, and process versus signal lines.

By the end of this module you should be able to read an unfamiliar P&ID fluently on first pass — exactly the prerequisite skill Module 15's HAZOP content and Module 16's plant-operations content both assume you already have.
