Startup and shutdown procedures, the normal operating envelope and why operator rounds exist, the management of change (MOC) process, and how an operator's and a process engineer's roles complement rather than overlap each other.

This module is where process design meets the reality of running a plant shift after shift for years. It works through why startup and shutdown are disproportionately represented in process safety incidents and how hold points and sequential procedures manage that risk, what a normal operating envelope actually is and why physical operator rounds exist to verify a unit is genuinely inside it, the management of change process and its most common real-world failure mode, and the complementary — not overlapping — expertise an operator and a process engineer each bring to the same unit.

Nearly every scenario in Module 17's troubleshooting content traces back to a lapse in one of the disciplines this module covers — a skipped procedure step, an envelope drifted outside of unnoticed, or a change made without updating the documentation meant to track it.
