Commissioning

The full commissioning test sequence for a PV/storage system — insulation resistance testing, string IV curve testing, ground fault detection, functional testing of rapid shutdown and monitoring — plus acceptance criteria and the commissioning documentation that closes out the installation.

An installed PV or battery storage system is not yet a verified system — it is an assembled one, and commissioning is the structured, sequential process that closes the gap between assembled and proven. This module walks the full sequence in order: visual and mechanical inspection, de-energized insulation resistance and polarity testing, controlled DC energization and string IV curve testing, ground-fault detection function testing, AC energization and interconnection, and functional verification of rapid shutdown and monitoring — each stage confirming it is safe to proceed to the next.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a string's IV curve — not a simple voltage reading — is the test that actually reveals a failed bypass diode, and why rapid shutdown compliance under NEC 690.12 has to be measured directly with a voltmeter rather than assumed from a device's spec sheet. Module 17's troubleshooting scenarios are checked directly against the commissioning baselines this module establishes.
