Power System Fundamentals

Generation, transmission, and distribution as one continuously balanced machine — voltage hierarchy, three-phase systems at utility scale, grid stability, interconnections, and utility operations. The on-ramp fluency every later module in this program assumes you already have.

This module starts where the sibling Applied Electrical Engineering program's building-level Module 1 leaves off, and takes the same core ideas — AC power, three-phase systems, frequency — up to utility scale: why the grid is organized into four voltage tiers rather than one, why synchronism (not just voltage) is what a power system is really protecting, and how a system of independent balancing authorities keeps generation and load matched across an entire interconnection in real time.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain, from first principles, why frequency droop is a system-wide signal rather than a local one, and why the North American grid is actually four separate interconnections rather than a single synchronized continent — groundwork Module 12's power system studies and Module 6's transmission content both build on directly.
