Module 11 · Power Plant Electrical Systems

Power Plant Electrical Systems

Generator excitation, synchronization, auxiliary power and station service, generator breakers and the step-up transformer, and black-start systems — the electrical infrastructure that lives entirely inside the plant fence.

Module 2 covered how a synchronous generator makes power; this module covers everything electrical around that machine that has to work correctly before, during, and after it does — an excitation system building the rotor field in the first place, a synchronizing scheme bringing the unit onto the grid without a damaging inrush, and a generator step-up transformer and generator breaker sized for a fault-current profile that has no equivalent anywhere else in the system.

It closes on the capability that matters most when the grid itself has failed: black-start — a plant's ability to energize its own auxiliaries and begin restoring the system from a completely de-energized state, directly relevant to the combined-cycle and hydroelectric project case studies later in this program.
