Module 17 · Renewable Energy Integration

Renewable Energy Integration

Utility-scale solar and wind plant electrical architecture, battery energy storage sizing, grid-forming vs. grid-following inverters, renewable interconnection studies, microgrids, and the smart grid this whole program has been building toward.

This module walks the electrical architecture of utility-scale PV plants and wind farms from DC strings and turbine generators through collection systems to the point of interconnection, then covers BESS sizing and augmentation planning — before turning to the distinction now driving interconnection studies across the industry: grid-forming inverters that can actually establish a voltage and frequency reference versus grid-following inverters that require one to already exist.

It closes with the staged renewable interconnection study process, microgrid islanding and black-start engineering, and the DERMS/ADMS software layer coordinating the bidirectional, distributed grid that Modules 6 and 7's traditional one-way distribution design is being actively re-engineered into.
