Signature Engineering Concepts

The concept pairs mechatronics engineers are expected to explain precisely and never confuse: accuracy vs. precision, torque vs. power, open-loop vs. closed-loop control, servo vs. stepper motors, encoder vs. resolver, backlash vs. compliance, and kinematics vs. dynamics, among others.

This is the hallmark module of the program. Mechatronics sits at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and control disciplines, and that intersection is exactly where terms get used loosely — accuracy for precision, resolution for repeatability, kinematics for dynamics — in ways that lead to real design and troubleshooting mistakes. Each section here takes one concept pair, defines both terms precisely, explains why the distinction has a genuine practical consequence, and works through a concrete example so the difference is never abstract.
