Motor Drives & Motion Control

Servo drives, stepper drivers, VFDs, motion controllers, trajectory planning, electronic gearing, homing, and position, velocity, and torque control — worked with a real trapezoidal motion profile calculation.

A motor converts current to torque, but it is the drive and motion controller stack covered in this module that decides where, how fast, and how smoothly an axis actually moves — from a servo drive's cascaded current, velocity, and position loops, to a stepper driver's open-loop stepping, to a VFD's scalar or vector control of an AC motor. This module works through each drive family, how a motion controller plans a trajectory, how electronic gearing and camming replace mechanical line shafts and cam profiles in software, and how an axis establishes a repeatable home position before any of it means anything.

A full worked trapezoidal motion profile calculation anchors the module in real numbers — solving acceleration time, cruise distance, and total move time for a 500 mm axis move, and showing exactly when a profile falls back to a triangular shape instead.
