RF Engineering Fundamentals

RF power, impedance, reflection, standing waves, VSWR, return loss, matching networks, transmission lines, and the Smith Chart — how an engineer gets power from a transmitter to an antenna without losing it along the way.

This module makes the jump from Module 1's wave physics to the practical problem every RF system has to solve: why 50 ohms shows up everywhere, what actually happens when impedance doesn't match, and why field technicians and design engineers both watch VSWR and return loss as the primary health check on an antenna system.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a mismatched antenna doesn't just weaken a signal — it can reflect enough power back to damage a transmitter — and why matching networks and the Smith Chart exist to solve exactly that problem, concepts Module 4 and Module 5 build on directly without re-deriving them.
