Enterprise Wi-Fi: Designing for Capacity, Not Just Coverage

Enterprise WLAN design, channel planning, cell sizing, mesh backhaul, fast roaming, QoS, WPA3-Enterprise security, and wireless controllers — worked as a real access-point count, not a coverage heat map alone.

This module starts from the single most common mistake in enterprise Wi-Fi design: sizing an access-point deployment from a coverage heat map alone. A 40,000 sq ft office floor is worked from a client-density target through to a capacity-driven AP count, then checked against 5 GHz and 6 GHz channel-reuse math and the airtime-fairness tradeoffs that make high-density design run APs at lower power with smaller cells rather than fewer APs at higher power.

From there the module works through mesh-network hop-count throughput penalties, why 802.11r/k/v fast roaming matters for voice and real-time traffic, how WMM's contention-window prioritization depends on wired DSCP marking to actually work end to end, the WPA3-Enterprise/802.1X security baseline every design has to get right, and how a wireless LAN controller's Radio Resource Management closes the loop between a paper design and a validated, working site.
