Trusting the Reading: How RF Engineers Verify a System With Real Instruments

Spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, power/VSWR meters, and direction finders — read correctly, cross-checked against each other, and chained into a real commissioning workflow.

This module isn't a tour of instrument menus. It's built around reading what an instrument is actually showing — recognizing when a rising noise floor on a spectrum analyzer is real interference versus a resolution-bandwidth setting that's too wide, converting a VNA's S11 reading into VSWR and Smith-chart matching direction, and knowing when an oscilloscope's eye diagram catches a transmitter problem a spectrum analyzer trace never would.

It also covers the field-verification side: power meters and VSWR meters that turn forward and reflected power into a trustworthy match reading — and a rising trend into an early fault warning — field strength meters that check a measured coverage walk test against Module 10's propagation prediction, and direction finders that locate an interference or jamming source once a spectrum analyzer has confirmed it. The closing section chains all of it into the sequence a real site commissioning actually runs, since a single uncross-checked reading is a data point, not an engineering fact.
