Motor Selection, Protection & Control

How an engineer actually chooses, protects, starts, and drives a motor — matching torque curves to loads, splitting NEC Article 430 protection into its real component jobs, and knowing exactly where a soft starter's authority ends and a VFD's begins.

Module 7 covered how power gets distributed to a load; this module covers the load itself, once that load is a motor. NEMA design letters, service factor, and enclosure type aren't catalog trivia — they're the variables that determine whether a motor survives the load it's coupled to. NEC Article 430's overload, short-circuit, and ground-fault protection are three separate jobs done by three separate devices, not one generic "motor protection" line item.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a soft starter and a VFD solve genuinely different problems even though both ramp voltage on the way up — and why that distinction, control the start versus control the speed, is exactly the hardware Module 9 builds its control circuits and interlocking logic on top of.
