Every efficiency measure in this module builds on equipment and controls fundamentals covered earlier in this program — the fan and pump affinity laws from Module 8, the refrigeration cycle from Module 7, the psychrometric reasoning behind economizers from Module 3 — applied here specifically to the question of where a building is wasting energy and what actually recovers it. Energy audits come first because a retrofit chosen from intuition rather than measured, end-use-level data routinely targets the wrong system entirely.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a variable-speed drive captures real energy savings that a throttled constant-speed system never can, why a condensing boiler can be specified onto the wrong hydronic loop and simply never condense, and how retro-commissioning routinely finds a building's largest efficiency opportunity in its existing sequences rather than in new equipment at all.
